In 2005, to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Horatio Nelsons death the Royal Mint have struck a very Limited Issue solid fine 999 Platinum Proof Piedfort Five Pound Crown Coin. The reverse is a portrait of Horatio Nelson in the uniform of Vice Admiral by James Butler and the obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley. Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelvth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces. In Britain the practise of striking piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known. Rare coin 1923 year issue - Russia. Rare russian gold coin - one chervonetz, minted 1923. Short history:chervonets is a former currency of the russian empire and soviet union. Originally a term for coins of purer alloy the name was later applied to various sums in russian rubles. In 1922, during the civil war, the soviet government tried to enforce communist economic ideals and eliminate debt through systematic devaluation of the rouble and its associated currencies meanwhile, the authorities introduced a parallel currency, called chervonets, which was fully convertible and backed by the gold standard. These coins contained 8.6 g of .900 alloy, and fetched a high rate on the foreign stock exchanges, allowing the financing of the soviet unions new economic policy. Before industrialisation the value of the chervonets was pegged at 10 rubles, and production of the gold coins ceased. The coin has many soft scratches on the both sides. There are several dint on the edges. The condition is circulated very good. The size is about: 22mm diameter. The weight is about: 8.6 grams. Coin price 03 February 2012 4000 *.
